Argentina’s “Messi”ah and the Spanish Stumble

Well all the teams have been in action at the World Cup and the real song and dance starts now. The stand out teams so far have been Argentina and Germany. Brazil were very good but we expected more and Spain was the disappointment. They are like South Africa in cricket , eternal chokers at the big stage. Talent wise they have all the big names Torres, Villa, Inesta, Xavi, Puyol and I can’t figure out why Fabregas isn’t preferred. But result wise they ended up losing to a below average Swiss team. Spain dominated so much of the possession with so many short passes, it looked like they forgot that you win a football match by scoring goals. They were taking most of their corners short and in the first half there was not one shot hit in anger. Complacency will always  humble you and Switzerland made most of the chance that came their way. I hope for the tournament Spain pull up their socks and play as they did at the Euros. We wouldn’t want to lose such a talented side at the group stages.

Argentina meanwhile have just routed South Korea 4-1 , Higuain scoring a hattrick. But the tournament so far belongs to Messi. He has been outstanding, his runs reminding you of Diego Maradona. A lot has been said about his talent and every artist needs a stage and  Messi is making this World Cup his own ( even without scoring!!). The Argentine team looks superb in attack and midfield, defence is a concern. But I hope they keep this momentum when they face the European teams, who will be more clinical. They are simply a joy to watch.
