World Cup 2010 : Promising Paraguay, Insipid Italy, Zealous New Zealand and Untiring USA

The Big guns have not had it easy so far. Germany, France and Spain have had shock defeats. Italy and England have drawn two matches against unfancied opposition. The most interesting match to date has been the USA – Slovenia match which ended 2-2. USA clawed back from 0-2 with two excellent strikes in the second half. They should have won the match but for an umpiring error that disallowed a 3rd goal. The teams were evenly matched and the football flowed from end to end at times during the match.
10 man Australia held Ghana to a draw but they missed an easy chance at the very end. A victory would have given them hope but now their chances of making it to the next round seem bleak. Ghana, with a man advantage, should have beaten them by a good margin and were brilliant in creating opportunities but they had no quality within the box. They were depending on long range strikes at the goal to break the deadlock.
Cameroon crashed out being beaten by Denmark 2-1 in another entertaining albeit error-filled match. Rommedahl’s goal was a beauty. Samuel Eto’o and co did not play as a cohesive unit and deserved to be beaten.
Paraguay are the dangerous flaoters of this tournament. They seemed to have enough in the tank in beating debutants Slovakia. Given their strong qualification run, where they beat Brazil, Chile and argentina and Qualified with 2 matches to spare just 1 point behind Brazil, they have it in them to beat any team.
Italy were held by New Zealand to a 1-1 draw. The less said about the boring match the better but New Zealand can be very proud at this special moment in their Footballing history.
I am looking forward to Brazil v/s Côte d’Ivoire, potentially the best match up of the first round.
