Bye Bye Bafana Bafana, Au Revoir France – First Exits in World Cup 2010

South Africa and France made their exits from the World Cup today. I just watched the highlights of both these matches. It was never going to be a spectacle – Uruguay v Mexico or SA v/s France. The quality simply was not there in the teams and it is quite okay to note the score and move on to the next match. France’s exit should be the one that could be called an upset, but i guess no one is complaining.

What was lacking in France’s team? Many people blame the coach for the debacle. But frankly with Ribery, Malouda, Anelka, Henry, Gourcuff, Evra, Ebidal, Govou – with or without the coach they should have been able to string a better performance. There are some bloated egos, stubborness and mutiny about this team which has caused them to fail at the greatest stage. I hope for France’s sake, the ones at fault need to be brought to task. The Coach deservedly deserves this ignominious exit and I wonder how the Frech Football authorities tolerated him for so long.

France never looked like getting a goal let alone a win. The one goal return that they have from 3 matches exemplifies this lack of a strike force. Henry’s handball against Ireland was in vain and I wish justice had been done at that time itself, so that we would have been spared of such boredom.

Uruguay and Mexico are the better teams in the group and they deserved to come through. Though South Africa became the first host nation not to qualify for the round of sixteen, they had more spark than France and can hold their heads high. They beat France 2-1 and Uruguay beat Mexico 1-0.

Well not much to comment on these games but am looking forward to Argentina v Greece. I hope we see a Goal Fest from the greatest player in the world at present.
