Remembering MJ – The King of Entertainment, Music, Dance and all else

In the increasing order of greatness – there are quite a few who hold the imagination of a tribe of people because of a single trait, then there are a lesser few who mesmerize a nation with their consistent creativity and then there are those one or two gems in each generation, who make the World  their playground.  Michael Jackson has been such a global force – unparalleled and unique. For all those who point out his troubled personal life as a blot on his greatness, all I have to say is that  Genius needs to be given a longer rope. If the man were left alone and judged only on his Musical Legacy, he is peerless.

In the Indian context, in the 1980s and 1990s , the entire Urban India grew up on his music and dance. If there was an individual who percolate through all sections of the society, it was he. It was he who influenced the advent of breakdance in India. Prabhudeva and Javed Jaffrey , who in-turn have influeneced so many others are his creative reflections. Even the street vendors in the cities knew of MJ.

He has been performing since1968, can you beat that? God made him for music and the world noticed him immediately. He replaced his brother as the lead singer for the Jackson 5 and despite a troubled childhood due to a tyrant father, he always gave a joyous feeling on stage.   He belonged on stage and was primarily responsible for the popularity of Jackson five with hits like “I’ll be there” and “ABC”. The Jackson 5, as of 2008, have sold over 100 million albums worldwide, an achievement bettered only by The Beatles.

Since 1978, MJ went solo and the rest, as they say is History.

Here is a list of his achievements

He was a singer-songwriter-dancer-choreographer-entertainer. If you watch “This is it”, it gives you an idea of his attention to detail and eye for the Big Impact in performances. The world indeed lost one of its precious gems last year. Calling him the King of Pop is very limiting and a slur on his greatness. He was God’s Gift to entertainment as a whole.

Your legend lives on MJ.
Thank you for all the good times, you have given us mere mortals.
